Academy Awards of Demolition
Posted by Thor Sunday Aug 10, 2008When we first thought about having a party for demolition, I thought who would want to come and get dirty and help us with the nasty part of our remodel. It turns out quite a few people wanted to come to help, to get dirty, to destroy stuff, and to fulfill their curiosity for our new project.
After we closed we went straight over to the house and started ripping up the carpets. While dragging out the remains of the 30 year old carpet I couldn’t help but notice that there was a lot of work to do and that Matt, Liz and I could only do so much. Amazingly almost a 100% of our RSVP’s came which doesn’t usually happen even for a strictly “fun” party.
We are so appreciative of everyone who came. We exceeded my expectations of what we could get done and how willing people were to contribute and jump whole-heartedly into the fun that I know demolition to be.
AND NOW FOR THE PRESENTATION OF THE 2008 “DEMI” ACADEMY AWARDS
- For Best Timing in a Demolition, the Demi goes to… Megan. Liz and Emily stumbled across Megan while picking up some needed supplies as Megan was waiting for a bus to go to our house. Luckily she did not make it to that bus as it would have taken her to the opposite side of town with no hope of returning to the right side of town. While the address for our house was right on the Evite, the “Map It” feature of the Evite directed everyone to other side of town, North vs. South. Luckily, she got a ride from Liz and Emily and arrived safely in time to help with removing all the corner bead and staples from the carpet.
- For Best Supporting Woman in a Demolition Role, the Demi goes to … Emily. She was there early, she stayed late, she ordered pizza, she picked up and dropped off people, if somebody needed help she had the extra hand. Her expertise in disaster preparedness will come in handy at every step in this project. She is going to make one heck of a nurse.
- For Most Prepared Demolisher, the Demi goes to… Drew. He came with necessary reinforcements and his trusty Hatchet with plans to throw it all walls. After that was quickly deemed to be far too dangerous. We gave him the task of taking down the living room-dining room divider which would involve a lot of pounding and damaging of walls. He was up to the task indeed. From the get go he went to work on a mission- not to leave until that wall was down. He succeeded by winning the party as the last man standing and completing his mission successfully. Here’s to you, hatchet throwing guy.
- For Best Demolisher in a Coworker Category, the Demi goes to… Jamie. The fact that she was the only coworker at the party does not take away from her contribution at all. She took to the sunroom demolition with a stylish vengeance. The sunroom was by far the nasty demo, as insulation regularly rained down.
- For Comeback Demolishers of the Year, the Demi goes to Maria and Samati. They didn’t make it to the party, but on Saturday with spirits low and exhaustion setting in, Matt’s friends showed up to power us through the last stages of demolition.
- For Most Enthusiastic Demolisher, the Demi goes to… Jason. Jason is always bubbling with excitement, but no more so then when we decided to bust out some walls. That’s what he came for and that’s what got his adrenaline running. His extra set of tools came in handy too.
- For Best Male and Female Demolisher of 2008, drumroll please… The Demi goes to… Kim and Terry. They were first on the scene and ready to get down to business with their steel-towed boots. These two are pros at the DIY remodel as they remodeled their own brick bungalow. Given a task, they quickly took control and got the job down no matter what they encountered. We owe a great debt of gratitude to these warriors of demo.
Thanks again to everyone and please stop by anytime to check out our progress. That goes for anyone else who may have missed the fun. I’m sure will have another party in the coming months.
