Furniture Fix

Thursday Aug 28, 2008

After the cleaning spree of the past few days and with a friend coming into town this weekend, we are considering spending our first night in the house in the next couple of days. But first, we needed to set the furniture up, leading us on the first steps of layout and deciding how we want the rooms to look.

img_2644.jpgWhen it came time to put together the bed in the master bedroom, we started to run into trouble. We had purchased a headboard at the Wick’s going out of business sale, and got a great deal, but unfortunately, it was only a headboard. We didn’t think that would be a problem since we had several old bedframes, but unfortunately none of them fit. Our decision? Take the feet and hardware off of the baseboards and foot boards that we have and make our own. We’ll see how long it takes for that to happen.

Also in the front bedroom, we discovered that the closet was not wood paneled, but rather wall paper with wood patterned paper. What is with these people and their obsession with fake wood. Like the fake wood laminate flooring they put down in the back bedroom on top of the actual wood floor!

We also went to buy paint earlier tonight, and were thwarted at the two paint stores that both chose Wednesday as their day to close early at 5:30.  So we headed for Menard’s for an all in one trip of paint and other supplies.  We had previously picked out a warm creamy taupe for the office, and a warm golden beige for the front bedroom. At least that’s what it was supposed to be. When we chose a new swatch at the store (because of course they have a completely different set of paint brands and colors), I thought we had nailed it, but the minute they mixed up the paint and put that little dab of color on, I hated it. Hated it.  I knew it was not golden beige but just yellow. Unfortunately, not much you can do at that point but take the paint home and sulk.  So I sulked.

I have learned my lesson.  No matter how anxious you are to paint, no matter how positive you are that this is the color, or how much your paint brushes call to you at night, always buy a small sample and put it up on the wall first, and wait a day.  No Matter What.  We will see how long this resolution lasts

The office color looked great, I thought, although Thor will merely tolerate it. I think we’ll lighten it up a bit with some white to not only lighten it a bit, but soften it some into something I think Thor will like a little better.

The bedroom color was just as hideous on the walls as it was in the store, however, looking at it next to the office color, I thought the two would look great together. I mixed it up, and they do. A touch of the brown mellowed out the yellow and made it the golden color I’d been seeking. It’s going to be beautiful.
